The Eugene Colby collection contains landscapes: 3 etchings, 2 oil on canvas paintings, 11 charcoal drawings, and 2 pencil drawings. Etchings: "Untitled" [bucolic scene with cows]; "Lake Scene with Canoe;" "Marblehead, Mass" . Paintings: "Old Apple Tree" (1896); "Birches" (1929). Charcoal drawings: "Shawanaga River; Georgian Bay" [1]; "Shawanaga River, Georgian Bay" [2]; "Near Mt. Washington;" "Isle Country Side Scene;" "New Empress Isle;" "Near Hemlock Channel;" "Hillside Near L.S. 47;" "Lake Scene;" "Hemlock Channel;" "Untitled" [sunset on water]. Pencil drawings: "Buffalo, Park;" "On the dock at Buffalo, NY, August 15, 1883." The collection also contains a rudimentary student lap desk made by Colby. The Eugene Colby collection contains drawings, etchings, oil paintings, and a student desk made by Colby.

It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. There are several other instances of African American students attending the school during the early 20th century as well...
